Exploring En Route: Must-See Stops Before Reaching Bloomington

As you make your way to Bloomington from every corner of the state, myriad must-see attractions line your route. Whether you hope to take refuge in scenic parks or check iconic Minnesotan landmarks off your bucket list, we’ve got you covered. Read on to discover the activities and attractions that will make your way to Bloomington a memorable journey.

From the North
If traveling from the upper-most part of the state from the scenic shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, your first stop should be Canal Park. Here, you can marvel at the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge and grab a coffee at the renowned Duluth Coffee Café & Roastery. As you head south on Interstate 35, take a detour to Pine City to visit the Snake River Fur Post, a reconstructed 1804 fur trade post. Continue your journey and stop in Hinckley for a sweet treat at Tobies, famous for its colossal caramel rolls.

As you near Minneapolis, head to the Mill City Museum for panoramic views of the Mississippi River overlooking the skyline. A historic landmark, the Mill City Museum allows visitors to observe the remnants of what was once the world’s largest flour mill. Take a guided tour, witness the power of 19th-century flour milling machines, travel through the flour tour, and even sample fresh-baked treats. Another must-see attraction is the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, most known for its iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture. Snap a pic and enjoy an interactive experience as you walk through the whimsical garden.

From the South
As you move through southern Minnesota, visit the iconic SPAM Museum in Austin, which is dedicated to the popular canned meat product (it’s better than it sounds). The museum provides interactive activities and historical displays for all ages, making it a fun attraction to check off your bucket list.

Or if you’re trekking through Mankato, a city rich in history and natural beauty, pay a visit to Minneopa State Park to see the stunning Minneopa Falls and bison herd. Continue north on Highway 169 and pause in Jordan to visit Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store, a whimsical destination filled with sweets and treats (and bacon-flavored everything).

From the East
If you’re traveling from the east, explore Stillwater’s historic downtown. Famous for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture, this charming town has a stunning riverfront along the St. Croix, quaint boutique shops, and delectable local restaurants. (Try a smashed burger at LoLo American Kitchen and Craft Bar, and you’ll be hooked.) Take a trolley tour to learn about Stillwater’s rich history, walk along the St. Croix River Crossing Loop Trail, or simply peruse the shops along the cobblestone streets.

As you near Bloomington, make a final pit stop at the Cathedral of Saint Paul and walk along Summit Avenue. The cathedral is an architectural wonder with a stunning interior and intricate mosaics, while Summit Avenue similarly provides a variety of architectural feats and is renowned for its Gilded Age historic homes and peaceful tree-lined streets, making it the perfect place for an afternoon stroll.

Make your first stop in Sauk Centre, home of Sinclair Lewis, and visit the Sinclair Lewis Boyhood Home and Museum. For a hearty meal, stop at Jitters Java Cafe for some local fare—and breakfast any time of day.

Continuing your journey, explore the charming city of St. Cloud, where you can visit the beautiful Munsinger and Clemens Gardens. For lunch, head to the White Horse Restaurant for a diverse menu (think perfectly seared burgers and hand-tossed pastas) and daily specials.

No matter which direction you’re coming from, Minnesota offers countless attractions along the route to Bloomington. From scenic landscapes to picturesque sculptures, Minnesota is full of hidden treasures that are yours to explore.
