This was our first time visiting and we will definitely be back! There are so many artifacts and exhibits. We arrived at noon and left at closing time 4 pm. Yes, you will need at least 4 hours to truly experience and appreciate all this place has to offer. We had the pleasure of meeting an employee named Carol and her knowledge, charisma and friendliness made our visit so much better! This place is fun for all ages, although the WWII footage and short film might be too graphic for the little ones. Overall, a great place to learn about Minnesota history and its people.
What an amazing museum! We learned so much about the history of Minnesota. The curators have done a wonderful job of using archival footage, real stories, and donated items to unlock the narratives and make them accessible. The hands-on exhibits were really fun as well. The staff were all kind & knowledgeable as well.
We came specifically for their Girlhood: It’s Complicated exhibit, and it was incredible, and we ended up enjoying the whole museum.
We spent 4 hours here on a Sunday morning/afternoon (2 adults, mid 30s).

Great weekend visit. Learned so much about the people and history of Minnesota. The staff was knowledgeable and provided great experiences. Loved the Girlhood exhibit and the tribute to Native American nations of this area.
Super fun and interactive. Not too many floors and exhibits to explore but definitely enough to peak your curiosity with lots of information so you can learn about what you’re seeing.
A great place to visit be it for family activities, couples on date night, classes, solo adventuring, etc. Everyone is always really friendly and cordial, the building itself is always kept clean and tidy and the exhibits are always interesting and engaging for all ages. Not to mention there’s some really cool places within the building that would make for great photography portrait backgrounds!
We visited the center as a part of the school field trip. It was very nice for kids (2nd graders). The exhibits were interesting. Rooms where you can view videos and listen to the guide was a huge blast among kids. Almost all exhibits were interactive, so it gave kids a chance to be immersed in that experience. We also had about an hour of Native American lecture in a classroom setting. It seemed too long though, it went over the allocated time (1+ hour instead of 45 minutes). However, since all kids were participating in answering questions, moving around, they stayed focused on the topic.
Overall it was an interesting experience for both kids and adults. Kids talked for days afterwards about what they loved in the center.

It’s aways amazing how much I learn every time I go to the History Center. The exhibits are always updating and the staff are so knowledgeable.
My friends and I went here to see a special showing of the Bad River Documentary about a goliath battle to save Lake Superior, the largest freshwater resource in America and the Bad River Reservation. We went to the Starbucks inside before the movie started. Nice seating area. After the movie they provided chicken wild rice soup, fry bread and a berry empanada. We sat at tables with others that came and they had discussion questions on the table. Overall it was a wonderful experience. Side note: they kept the History Center’s store open and they had a variety of things in there. They also have free entry on Thursdays.
