DOWNTOWN. Originally opened as the Schubert Theater, it was renovated and renamed in 1994 for St. Paul's literary hero, F Scott Fitzgerald. Its primary tenant now is Lake Wobegon's Garrison Keillor when he's not on the road. The building is handsome and comfortable with good acoustics and sight lines. DOWNTOWN. Dedicated to preserving the rich history of the state of Minnesota and its residents, the Great American History Theatre produces folk performances and historically based plays. Most of the company's performances are staged downtown at the Crawford-Livingston Theatre. Previous performance topics have included a devastating fire in 19th century Iowa and the life of Judy Garland.

MILL DISTRICT. Birthplace of the professional American Regional theater movement, the Guthrie bridges the gap between community theater and commercial Broadway productions. The Guthrie's resident acting company presents classic works and promises high professional standards. In its sleek, Jean Nouveau-designed space on the river, the Guthrie boasts three distinct stages, including a thrust, a proscenium, and a black box-inspired studio space. A full-service restaurant and a gift shop are also on the premises.

DOWNTOWN. This aptly named structure, built in 1902 as the Federal Court House and Post Office, is noteworthy for its commanding Romanesque architecture. It now houses many of the city's cultural organizations, including Saint Paul City Ballet and Skylark Opera. The Landmark Center is also home to the Schubert Club Museum of Musical Instruments (which displays harpsichords, an Indonesian gamelan, and others) and Young Audiences of Minnesota, an arts organization.
