Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary
1 Theodore Wirth Pkwy at Glenwood Ave Minneapolis, MN 55422 US +1-612-370-4903Early in the 20th century, Eloise Butler appealed to the Minneapolis Parks Board to create a protected space to preserve the region's native plant life. The original 3-acre sanctuary has now grown to over 15 acres. The sanctuary offers wooded walkways and gardens representative of Minnesota's major habitats. A display of discreetly labeled wildflowers like columbine, trillium, lavender, white violets, ferns, and myrtle line the walkway of a "secret garden."

SOUTHWEST MINNEAPOLIS. Encompassing several horticultural areas, this space is well-known locally for its rose garden, the nation's second-oldest municipal rose garden. Located on Lake Harriet, the garden promotes quiet, contemplative time away from the hustle and bustle of an urban environment. Meticulously cared for, the garden features more than 4000 plants and 250 species. Two fountains border the garden; the bronze-and-marble Hefflefinger Fountain is from the Villa Montalto near Florence, Italy. Rock gardens and perennial gardens are also featured.

CHASKA. Managed by the University of Minnesota, this over 900-acre arboretum is rich with streams, fields, plant collections, and display gardens. Each season reveals its own unique blooms; even during winter months, orchids and hibiscus thrive in the conservatory. A research library and gift shop are housed in the Snyder Building, where lectures, demonstrations, and classes are offered. Lunch in the Arboretum Restaurant is sure to enhance your visit.

LORING PARK. Located next to Walker Art Center, this facility is the country's largest urban sculpture garden. More than 40 examples of modern, three-dimensional art are spread across 11 acres, and the best-known is arguably a 52-foot spoon holding a 9½-foot cherry titled "Spoonbridge and Cherry" by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.
