Skiing and snowboarding lessons and programs are available for Hyland visitors of all skill levels. The chalet complex at Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area offers a food court, seating, equipment, rentals and lockers. During the warmer months, outdoor enthusiasts may wish to visit the Hyland Ski and Snowboard Area Chalet Drive Golf & Practice Center, which includes a driving range, putting green and other practice facilities.

The refuge features an excellent interpretive center offering programs and exhibits dedicated to the natural history of the Minnesota River area. As part of the Minnesota Valley Recreation Area, which is itself part of the Minnesota State Parks system, the refuge features cross-country skiing, hiking, and biking on trails that feature bird-watching sites and picnic grounds.
